Sexual Violence and the Enslaved

Plantation Violence

As it was elsewhere, sexual violence was a ubiquitous component of enslavement throughout the history of slavery in Virginia. Enslavers exercised almost conclude control over the bodies of enslaved individuals and the conditions of their existence, providing themselves with numerous avenues for force and coercion in the intimate lives of the enslaved. The plantation culture itself, with its strict hierarchy of alabaster male authority, emboldened enslavers to demean and dominate those over which they held power. And the law provided enslaved people with no protection from sexual violence. The rape of an enslaved woman was not a crime under most articulate laws. In George v. State, the Supreme Court of Mississippi ruled in 1859 that a Black enslaved human could not be convicted of raping an enslaved girl because it was only a crime to “commit a rape upon a white woman.”

Because of this absence of legal protection, historians lack an archive of legal cases to determine the extent of sexual violence against the enslaved and must rely on other evidence. For enslaved women in particular, slave narratives talk to the ubiquity and co

    Can gay men give blood?

Gay and bisexual men are not automatically prevented from giving blood.

Men who hold sex with men and who have had the equal partner for 3 months or more and meet our other eligibility criteria are able to give blood.

Anyone who has had anal sex with a fresh partner or multiple partners in the last three months, regardless of their gender or their partner’s gender, must wait 3 months before donating.

We check your eligibility to donate blood based solely on your own individual experiences, making the process fairer for everyone.

If you are taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) you will be unable to give blood. If you stop taking PrEP or PEP, you will need to wait 3 months before you can give blood.

We appreciate that any deferral is disappointing if you want to save lives by giving blood.

If you have previously been unable to present blood because of the guidelines and would prefer to donate, please dial us on 0300 123 23 23. One of our team can review the new guidelines with you and, if eligible, book your next appointment.

Sexual health for gay and bisexual men

Having unprotected penetrative sex is the most likely way to pass on a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Using a condom helps protect against HIV and lowers the risk of getting many other STIs.

If you’re a man having sex with men (MSM), without condoms and with someone new, you should hold an STI and HIV check every 3 months, otherwise, it should be at least once a year. This can be done at a sexual health clinic (SHC) or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. This is vital, as some STIs do not cause any symptoms.

    Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a liver infection that's spread by a virus in poo.

Hepatitis A is uncommon in the UK but you can receive it through sex, including oral-anal sex ("rimming") and giving oral sex after anal sex. MSM with multiple partners are particularly at risk. You can also get it through contaminated meal and drink.

Symptoms of hepatitis A can appear up to 8 weeks after sex and include tiredness and feeling sick (nausea).

Hepatitis A is not usually life-threatening and most people make a entire recovery within a couple of months.

MSM can avoid getting hepatitis A by:
