Google AI Declares Mario Kart Characters Queer , Oops
Google’s new AI Overview feature, which debuted last week, has been freaking everybody out for many reasons — like that AI famously contributes to the destruction of the planet — but in local news, it threatens to absolutely demolish mid-size publishers (e.g, this website), especially as it continues developing content partnerships with major media conglomerates, ensuring their already-secured near-dominance of search results (through swarming and SEO mastery) will gradually become absolute control, until little guys like us fade into the ether. It is very bleak!
However, as reported by Them.us, at least Google has cited Autostraddle for one thing: the source of a question regarding how many gay characters are in Mario Kart (Ironically this screenshot has gone viral without any attribution to us).:

Super Mario Kart on the Super NES was my childhood jam. I could never get into sports or racing games, as they were too intense and I preferred watching my older brother play them anyway. But Mario Kart was pretty and bright and controlled perfectly and had a flawless learning curve so that novices and experts alike could find infinite replay value. Its multiplayer was also one of the best.
I always played as Toad or Yoshi, which I didn’t know at the time was because I was gay! Or it turned me gay; it’s not clear which. Some Mario Kart characters are more queer than others, and over the many years and 10+ games we’ve had plenty of opportunity to speculate about their IDs.
Note: I’m not including every character here. I’ve taken out the baby and children characters, for obvious reasons (they’ll grow into their queerness eventually, let’s give them space). I also took out characters that only appeared in one game, were alternate costumes/colorways of other characters, or about whom I couldn’t find something funny to state. A high school teacher told her students Nintendo characters have different sexual and gender identities as she claimed Mario is homosexual while Princess Peach is a 'massive lesbian.'
Remy Elliott, who is employed by the New York Capital Department of Education, made the comments in a presentation to students during a Gay Straight Alliance after-school club meeting.
In a video uploaded to her TikTok account, she reshared the powerpoint, alleging Princess Daisy is 'hella fluid, polyamorous' while Luigi is a 'demisexual dude.'
Elliott, who has over 81,000 followers and identifies as pansexual, has since deleted the videos and made her profile private.
She is certified under the name Jeremy William Elliott and currently teaches 9th grade at the DOE though previously taught younger grades, Fox News reports.

REDMOND, Wash. — Nintendo is reportedly hoping to generate some positive news during Pride Month by announcing that, any day now, Mario is going to experiment with homosexuality for the first time in his 30 year career.
“The time is now for Mario to try a petty bit of gay stuff, and frankly it has been too long,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “Nintendo has failed to properly capitalize on this growing movement in a profitable way, and as such, we’re gonna make up for lost time by making Mario just go completely hog uncontrolled on honestly probably a couple of different partners this month.
