Toni Tennille: Pink Floyd, Pot And Why She Divorced "The Captain"

Top 40 radio was a lot different when I was growing up in the 70's. You could catch Elton John, followed by the Carpenters then Barry Manilow and Wings. The world "eclectic" comes to mind when I think of the AM stations I listened to.

And a big part of the 70's was a duo who called themselves "The Captain and Tennille." Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille were married for almost 40 years. They had a string of unlikely hits  including "Love Will Keep Us Together," "Muskrat Love," and "Do That To Me One More Time" just to name a few. Toni wrote, and Daryl unruffled. It was, as Toni told me, a "perfect" pairing.

As a kid, I sort of had a crush on Toni Tennille. I kind of still do. And I enjoy the harmony she, and her then husband, recorded as much today, as I did 40 years ago.

It seemed to most everyone the couple had everything....hit songs, plenty of coins, and the optimal marriage. But Toni told me while she loved Daryl with all her heart, her now ex-husband "just didn't know how to be affectionate." And after nearly 40 years of marriage, the two divorced.

Fast forward a couple of

Eldergays, tell me about the Captain & Tennille

First off Toni Tennille and Daryl Dragon Dragon didn't marry until 1974 as their act began to take off. The couple had been living together which many including Toni's mother and the couples agents, handlers, etc.. didn't approve of at all. Suits minded because they thought if word got out the couple were "living in sin" it would injure their career. So the couple got married....

Thing is when people marry for all the improper reasons it never really works out. Daryl Dragon loved Toni Tennille in his own way, but the man came with tons of emotional baggage that meant he just wasn't the loving and affectionate sort of husband that Toni Tennille wanted. Their marriage lasted nearly 40 years largely because Toni Tennille kept trying to get through to her husband and construct things work. That and of course they had their career......

If the couple hadn't found that early success and stardom they likely would have continued living together for a while, then drifted apart.

Toni Tennille reveals the last words she told 'Captain' Daryl Dragon

Toni Tennille will always own a special place in her heart for ex-husband and longtime musical spouse Daryl Dragon. When Dragon, the cap-wearing 'Captain' of the Captain and Tennille duo, passed away earlier this month at age 76 Tennille was by his side. In a new interview Tennille talks about their final moments together and reveals the last words she said to her longtime love.

Toni Tennille will always have a extraordinary place in her heart for Daryl Dragon.

When Dragon, the cap-wearing “Captain” of the Captain and Tennille duo, passed away earlier this month at age 76 of renal failure at a hospice in Prescott, Ariz., Tennille, his longtime musical match and ex-wife, was by his side.

“He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly,” the 78-year-old told Fox News in a statement at the time. “I was at my most creative in my life when I was with him.”

In the latest issue of Closer Weekly currently on newsstands, Tennille revealed tha

As one half of the Grammy Award-winning, chart-topping married musical duo Captain & Tennille, Toni Tennille’s distinctive and powerful singing voice and radiant smile helped explain the mood of the mid-to-late 1970s. Dominating the airwaves with inescapable smack songs such as “Love Will Keep Us Together,” “Shop Around,” “Lonely Evening (Angel Face),” “Muskrat Love,” and originals such as “The Way That I Want To Touch You” and “Do That To Me One More Time,” Captain & Tennille also had their own TV variety series and TV specials. However, the duo’s bubbly and romantic tune had little in usual with their actual association. In Toni Tenille: A Memoir (Taylor Trade, 2016), written with Caroline Tennille St. Clair, Toni Tennille not only shares enthralling biographical information (she played keyboards with the Beach Boys and sang backing vocals on Pink Floyd’s The Wall, for example), she also opens up about her complex affair with emotionally withdrawn ex-husband Daryl Dragon (aka The Captain). I spoke with Toni about the manual in April 2016.
