The McKinney, Texas native made a rapid decision to out himself because of homophobic comments made on the air. After the incident, in an interview with NY1, he said: “I never really opened up about my being on the show that much. I thought it was more interesting for me to be more of a mystery. Then one day, I realized I have things to say about my life too, especially organism a gay man in mass media,” says Duran. “I never was closeted on the breeze. I never, ever said I wasn’t gay. I never brought it to the forefront. Thing is, I was always anxious it would turn into the ‘Elvis Duran Is Gay’ show.”

The Brand-new York City-based radio host and former Philadelphian spearheads the “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show,” the nation’s number-one Top 40 morning show.
Duran, 49, has spent about three decades climbing the radio-industry ladder, including several seminal years spent in Philadelphia.
“Philly was a major turning show in my life,” Duran said. “I’d always lived in the South — cities in Texas or in Atlanta, Ga. — and never really had a career path as far as where I was going to complete my radio thing. In those days, you just went where the jobs were. If it was a larger market — and Philadelphia’s a large market — you grab it.”
In 1989, he was offered a position as program director and host at Philly’s WIOQ, now known as Q102, which, until that time, had been a classic-rock station.

Before becoming a big name at Z100, Elvis Duran worked at several other radio stations. He was an on-air personality in Philadelphia and also worked in Austin, Texas.
